The National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information reported that 896,000 children suffered from some form of abuse or neglect in the United States in 2002. In addition to the enormous number of children who suffered the effects of child abuse in 2002, the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System has stated that an estimated 1,400 children died as the result of abuse in that same year. Like many other forms of abuse, it has been suggested that the number of child abuse cases that are reported each year are far less than actual amount of cases of abuse that really take place.

Listed below are 2002 child abuse and neglect fatality statistics for the United States:

  • 41% of the victims were under the age of 1.
  • 35% of the victims were between the ages of 1 and 3.
  • 12% of the victims were between 4 and 7 years old.
  • 6% of the victims were between the ages of 8 and 11.
  • 6% of the victims were between 12 and 17 years old.

Although it is controversial, there are statutes of limitations regarding cases of child abuse in the State of New York. This means that if a victim of child abuse does not file a claim against the abuser within a certain time frame, he or she may not be able to. In order to ensure that you have the ability to hold your child's abuser responsible for the harmful acts that they have committed, it is extremely important that you hire experienced legal representation immediately. It is understandable that a parent may be hesitant to allow their child to be involved in litigation, but please know that there are many laws that provide children with protection during the litigation.
